4 Counties, 400 Years,

400 Trails, 400 Miles

A year-long event along trails in New York State’s Ulster, Dutchess, Orange and Putnam Counties. Grand Walkabout runs from September 2008 through September 2009 and you can join it at any time during that period.Hikers

Over the year, you can earn badges for the number of miles you walk, run, ski, snowshoe, or travel by wheelchair through our mountain, meadow, riverside, and urban trails. To make the challenge more fun, we’ll inform you of special events along our trails throughout the year.

Then we’ll salute your success at a Celebration a year later.

Celebrating the
Quadricentennial

The first bridge built across the Hudson River, the former Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, will reopen as Walkway Over the Hudson in 2009 – the most celebrated event of the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial. This new footpath across the Hudson will link hundreds of miles of trails in the neighboring counties on both sides of the river – trails that range from flat former railway beds to rocky cliffs that require technical climbing skills, and they encompass historic and cultural walks through villages and cities. Join us for a year-long adventure along those trails, topped off by a final mile over the majestic Hudson when

Walkway opens.
