Grand Walkabout (GWA) was created by a group of trails enthusiasts to celebrate the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial by promoting the foot trails throughout the mid-Hudson counties of Ulster, Dutchess, Orange and Putnam. It was partly inspired by the development of Walkway Over the Hudson, which transformed an unused railroad bridge into a spectacular pedestrian path high above the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland, linking the network of trails on both sides of the river. Grand Walkabout participants tracked their miles traveled and trails visited for a year, between September 2009 and September 2009.
The Trails Resource Directory, which can be downloaded from this website, is GWA’s lasting legacy to the many people who walk, run, hike, and ski the mid-Hudson trails.
